Notice from the Water & Sewer Department

The Charlton Water and Sewer Department would like to remind residents that materials such as disinfecting wipes, baby wipes, napkins and paper towels should never be flushed down the toilet. These products can create significant problems for the sewer collection system - creating blockages, backups, issues at the sewer lift stations as well as clogged residential grinder pumps. Even products labeled as “flushable” wipes should not be flushed down the toilet.

Due to the recent demand and shortage of toilet paper as a result of COVID-19, we have heard of an increase in the use of these non-flushable materials. Cities and towns in our area are starting to report related sewer collection system problems as a result. We ask that residents please pay extra attention to what they are flushing and remind you not to flush products other than toilet paper.

Thank you for your cooperation.
