Earth Day Committee

The Earth Day Committee is responsible for planning Charlton's Earth Day each spring. An informal group called the Earth Day Festival Planning Group plans and assists with the Earth Day Festival. Meetings are open to anyone interested in volunteering or sharing ideas for Earth Day.

Charlton Earth Day 2018 - Saturday, April 28th!
Cleanup is 8 a.m. - noon and the Earth Fest is 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Road Clean-UP – Sign up begins April 1st! The annual town wide clean-up will run from 8 am – noon. Residents are encouraged to pick up litter along town roads. Sign-up for a road using the Road Registration Form or in person at the Charlton Public Library or Charlton Senior Center. Heavy duty trash bags will be available at the Charlton Senior Center beginning April 25th for those who would like to get a head start on litter collection, or pick them up Saturday April 28th from 8 am – noon. There are no road crews going out to collect bags left on the roadside, so please bring back litter filled bags to the Earth Day dumpster behind Town Hall. Dumpster is donated by Casella Waste systems and is for roadside trash only. This is not an electronic or hazardous waste collection event – only for roadside trash.

Caution: If anyone encounters a syringe on the roadside, do not touch. Contact the Charlton Police (508-248-2250) who will dispose of it as medical waste.

Free lunch & t-shirts for litter collectors! Volunteers who pick up trash are welcome to a light meal in the senior center from 10 – 12 pm, courtesy of Millennium Power Company. The first 100 volunteers on Saturday receive a free t-shirt commemorating this year’s Earth Day, also provided by Millennium and designed by a Charlton Middle School student.

Charlton Earth Fest on the Town Common will run from 11am – 2 pm on the 28th in conjunction with the clean-up event. Earth Fest includes educational vendors, live music by Grade “A” Fancy and The Grey Whisker Pickers, food vendors Tony Island Hot Dogs and Suzy-Q’s ice cream, and agricultural vendors. The Charlton Police will offer a car seat safety program at the event.

Educational vendors will include soil conservation demonstrations from the Shepherd Hill Environmental Club, science fair projects by C.M.S. students, solar energy for the home by Ron Wilmot, games for kids, and more.

New this year! All are encouraged to show their love of Charlton by helping the Earth Day Committee in their quest to identify “Charlton’s Natural Treasures.” The Committee is seeking submissions of photos, poems, or short descriptions of special and beloved natural areas: landscapes, vistas, trees, waterways, stonewalls, boulders, any natural place in town that holds special meaning or beauty. Submit via email to NaturalTreasuresofCharlton@gmail.com or mail to Earth Day Committee, Town of Charlton, 37 Main St. Please include your name and the closest road location of the natural treasure. All who contribute will be entered into a raffle. The Committee will combine all submissions into a booklet which will be available on the Web. Limited print copies will be made to present to Town Hall and the Library. Download Flyer.
